Before a film starts at Regal, when all the trailers are done airing, Regal does a little intro and asks the audience to mute their cellphones, get ready for the film, etc. All that good jazz, it’s actually kind of iconic at this point.
Anyways, I missed most of the trailers because I came a little late. I caught the one for Rachel McAdams’ newest movie Send Help and the Regal intro rolled in. I was a bit let down, as I really wanted to see the Doomsday teaser and thought it slipped.
But then, Regal does something it doesn’t usually do. “The following preview has been approved”. Oh! After the intro? Unexpected, but I’m not complaining. One more trailer, a pleasant surprise.
WARNING: SPOILERS FOLLOW, OBVIOUSLY
I was sure it was the Doomsday teaser and then the first few seconds rolled around. A man with a leather jacket rides a bike on a dirt road. It looks very similar to imagery from X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The countryside setting. I’m thinking, who is this? Hawkeye?
And then the music hits; a soft melodic recreation of the iconic Avengers theme. It’s gotta be him. An old friend, it’s gotta be Steve.
So it was, as a smiling Steve put away his Captain America uniform and held a baby. Accompanied by the words — “Steve Rogers will return in Avengers: Doomsday”.
At that moment, I forgot all prior reservations I had to the rumors that Captain America would be the star of the movie. I forgot all future criticisms I’d have, and have right now while writing this. For the moment, I was just happy.
In a cinematic universe that’s largely felt void, Chris Evans’ Steve Roger was a welcome bundle of sunshine , even in a scene that featured an empty dirt road and a house in the middle of nowhere.
Cause truth be told, I still never get fatigued with any entry starring Steve Rogers. First Avenger, The Winter Soldier, Civil War, Endgame. I can watch those movies all day. And despite the overall reluctance I have, the teaser showed me that although my mind might be weary, my heart is more than open to one last Steve Rogers led movie.
